Inside Anbar - Iraq
August 2007The 'almost breathtaking' turnaround in Anbar is often held up as an example of US success in Iraq. In the second of his exclusive embed reports, Sean Smith reveals what life is really like there. The village in Anbar is a ghost town. Notes on every door say residents fled because the Americans killed five people. "These people are obviously scared out of their minds", states a marine. Another soldier tries to reason with an Iraqi who wants to file a complaint. He accuses the soldiers of killing his brothers and stealing his money. "It wasn't marines", protests the soldier. "But if they did do it, they did it for a reason." Back at camp, men speak of their desire to return home. "My mum hasn't seen us together in almost four years", states one. "No amount of money is worth being here".
